bruce remmer |
Born in Rhodesia, Bruce Remmer is a self taught artist living and working in Sydney, Australia.
Initially working purely in an expressionist figurative style, with a bias towards portraiture, Bruce began experimenting with abstraction after a chance encounter with Adelaide based artist, Julianne Joyce.
"I was fascinated by the fact that with abstract painting, the independent elements of the painting are quite often without meaning, however when presented together they can evoke recognition of an image, a memory or an emotion.
For me abstraction tends to be a subconscious process. If I try and plan the composition or think about what I'm doing in any depth, the finished work seems to lose its potency. Rather than adopting a particular style or technique to my painting, I am more concerned with allowing the work to develop into its own self-directed form.
Portraiture on the other hand is quite a different process. Even with the simplest of styles, and sometimes more so, there is a great deal of precision required. Firstly the painting has to look like a person, secondly it has to look like the sitter, and lastly it has to capture an aspect of the person's personality or mood."
